I don't know what it is about being surrounded by people, but whenever I'm in a pubic setting, it's like my muse comes to life. I could sit for days alone in my room and get two paragraphs done, but if there are people around, I get so much done.
After my midterm (which went terribly, may I add), we began watching the 1933 King Kong, which I've never seen before. The movie itself is pretty good, but instead of paying attention to it, I pulled out my laptop and opened up my book. An hour in, I've got several pages out, and I feel good about it. It's been a while since I cranked out so many words in such a small amount of time, and my novel has been grossly over neglected.
I am feeling a bit discouraged, though. Over at the "Absolute Write Water Cooler", a forum for writers, I posted a thread about the Young Adult vampire market. I've been working on this book for over four years now. I wrote the first draft, edited it, scrapped it, and started over. Now I'm almost finished with this one, and once that is done, I want it published. It'll take a while to edit it before I start sending in queries, but... I want to share this with the world. I love the book, the characters, everything about it so much.
Twilight sparked this vampire craze. I hate Twilight. No... I loath Twilight. I don't think it deserves all the hype it's received, and there are books out there much more worthy of all this press and fame. Regardless, it has created a new fad. Yes, vampires have always been around, and always been around, but the market is saturated with them right now. This frustrates me, because I've worked so hard on developing this story. I don't want to get rejected JUST because of the vampires. I have heard people receive rejections simply because the book was about vampires, nothing else. It could have been the greatest book ever, but nobody wants to publish it because of the content. It's unfair.
This book means a lot to me. I have worked on developing these characters for years. I think the book is pretty original, and even though there are aspects of it that are not, I give them a twist. I make it my own.
I want to be rejected because the book isn't good. I don't want to be rejected because of the subject matter. Ugh.

Sounds like you think of it very much. I tell you what. you in my humble opinion :P need to get some folks read it and give you their opinions. it helps a lot, believe me. There's been times when i thought what i wrote (scientific reports) were very accurate , informative and so forth yet when i listened to some crappy(really crappy) presentations on the subject i all of a sudden realized how mine was weak and fragile in some points.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind i never write for grades. i respect the reader and hence write according to the accepted pattern and very precise.
